With the new EeePCs you have a choice between the Linux distro and XP. The Linux version comes with more memory. Because the Linux distro comes cheap they can put a larger second SSD into the system and still maintain the same price. Since you can load any OS you want, including the well regaurded Ubuntu Linux, on to the Eee, the Linux version seems the better deal.

I heard that linux runs well on computer that run on small amounts of ram. I played with a linux once, its quite appealing, very good in what i can provide. Covers the basics. Problem is its a bit hard to find software for it =P Maybe they should make a windows that is like linux, requires small ram, covers the basics and is overall, a bit appealing =P

You can order Dell computers with Ubuntu Linux preinstalled. They are having some sucess with this and I think Linux being used in the Eee and other in it's class of computers is an out growth of that sucess. As Ubuntu gets better we will start seeing more computers sold.

| There is a lot of software readily available for Windows, that's why going with Windows XP would be a good choice! I would rather be running Windows XP than Linux because Linux doesn't support most of the software that you would find online. Even though it seems simple, it takes time getting used to Linux. It would be nice using Microsoft Office 2007 on a portable device like this! Because the Windows XP Operating System does take up a lot of space on the ASUS, I would stick with Linux only because it would give me more free storage space.

PC's should be cheaper because Windows if a large part of the cost of any computer. Ubuntu makes it's money in support, not in selling the OS so manufacturers can use Ubuntu, lower the overhead and lose the need to install so much crapwhare to offset the cost. I know it is un-popular with some people, but I have been a Windows guy since I started using computers, back in Windows 3.1 days, and I will stick with it but I hope that Ubuntu becomes big. It would provide me a secondary OS and force Microsoft to work harder to provide a better OS.

They also offered affordable desktops with the gOS (Linux Distro) for awhile at Wal-mart. I think they still might, I just haven't heard anything about it for a number of months now.

I am pretty sure that the gOS computers are only available on walmart.com now. Everex's gOS computers had slipped my mind until it was broght up here, but it is another example of what I was talking about. When Linux becomes as easy to use as windows is for the average user, Microsoft will have to really step it up.
