vlc and avg antivirus are great programs. Vlc basically supports all file types to be played which is great, and avg is as good as norton but its FREE! very good for students who cant afford or wanna buy other antivirus software

Hmmm, shouldn't this belong in the software section?
And who thinks that we should have an organized by use software list? Having audio players, security applications, and modeling software all into one post is kind of confusing....
And a quick note, Paint.NET is also a great application. I like it more than GIMP

True
But we should at least organize it, having random applications is kind of confusing.
And anyone who wants a very comprehensive and continually updated list of freeware applications can go here.

Agreed about norton, it came pre-installed on my computer and it made it lag heaps. It didn't scan fast enough and well I found better free antivirus such as Avast! Thanks for the list too! I use some of them already =D

P.S how does norton get those fancy awards anyway? don't users get to comment?

CCleaner broke my sisters computer :S - unlucky I guess but I don't want to take the risk.

GIMP - does it do layers?

Yeah, as I said, my sister was probably unlucky, it's a VERY VERY old laptop, only just able to run xp on it. It's dead now anyway lol

Even though they have moved to AVG 8 they still have a free version of it which is rather nice in my opinion. Instead of having to run two separate programs for anti-virus and for spyware they have incorporated the 2 into one single program. And best of all its still free and better than Nortons.
