Default Use One Note!

The best computer discovery I have made since I returned to university is Microsoft One Note. It is, bar none, the single most useful piece of software I have on my computer outside of the Adobe programs I need to finsih my school and freelance work.

I keep all of my class notes, work notes, phone call notes from my freelance clients. I also organize my thoughts, articles ideas and journal entries.

Audio and video files can be added, e-mails can be linked from Outlook and import a number of file types into your note. Quick notes can be added from service tray. And all of it searchable.

All information I might need is all in one place.

Most definitely, it is an extremely useful piece of software. And the inking experience is very nice, so if you have a wacom tablet, it is quite easy to take handwritten notes on the computer.

For folks who need a bit of help with OneNote, these may be helpful:

Microsoft Office OneNote
has training for both OneNote 2003 and OneNote 2007, including
  • how to get the most out of OneNote by flagging notes as you work and then using the flags to find your notes;
  • taking audio and video notes, and
  • how to organize your notebook using sections and folders.

Webcasts and podcasts are available at Tips & Tricks.

Corrine, this is a good point. Like most Microsoft programs it's basic functions are pretty intuitive, but if you don't dig into it you will miss out on the most useful stuff. Use the training, it will help.

I personally use TomBoy notes when I'm using Ubuntu (and oneNote when I'm using Windows). TomBoy is very nice and it gets the job done for text notes. Turn it on at boot and you've got a little yellow sticky pad in the upper right of your computer (default Ubuntu placement). It has much less functions than OneNote and is also less processor intensive, but it gets basic text notes done. It's nice for a linux, minimalist alternative.

My school took the initiative to implement a Tablet PC program for all incoming students.

Thing is, the consensus was to use Microsoft Journal for taking notes over One Note. And I followed suit. Journal just has much better writing options with the pen then One Note does. I don't why they are but One Note's 'fine' ink is thick whereas Journal's 'fine' setting is actually a fine type ink.

The only drawback is not having the all in one software notebook deel you get with One Note. Though it's not at all difficult to have a folder for each class you take notes in. Journal will automatically convert your handwriting in the title area to text and use that as the default file name when saving. Though I found it much more convenient to add the date to the front of that. So if I took notes today, May 20th, my file would be 0520N - Semantic Web.jnt. Used to do May20N but then the folder alphabetizes them. Sorting by date view doesn't work if I go back and add some notes to older ones. Tada!

ANYWAY! Lol. Just letting you there is an alternative to One Note. There's always an alternative.

Unhappy
