There are nicer programs than VLC. I'll give you an example lets say you have a Keyboard that can control Volume and Playback controls VLC doesn't pick up the commands at all. There is one called Zoomplayer that has a slicker interface and can pull the commands from a wireless keyboard to control the playback and does much the same stuff as VLC. I have a tendancy to use them both equally. It's all personal preference i guess.

i use iTunes to put all my music at reach and Media Player Classic for all videos tho you have to make sure you have the right codecs but it's worth it to play all video files on it.

i use mostly windows media player because its easy and it works well. Some people watch stuff with itunes and I dont know why but i really dislike it. Maybe because it doesnt really support all files and run that well

iTunes is... meh <_< It now has an "optional" download of Safari. Maybe that's why I don't like it, since iProducts bring in too many iFriends along if you don't pay attention :P
Zoom Player is included with CCCP.
Windows Media Player is... flawed. For one it refuses to load VSFilter and Haali's Media Splitter on mine properly, and the whole DRM license is just a party of malware.

It was the subtitle bug. I didn't read too much about it, but it was along the lines of buffer overflow, and allowing malicious code to run via the subtitles. Thank goodness it's fixed. But seriously... if VLC sucks at rendering subtitles, they should at least take off the feature unless they do some serious revamping.
