Audacity is a light weight, open source, high quality bit of sound editing/recording software. It isn't meant for really heavy duty tasks, but it's always been able to handle anything I could throw at it. (Which wasn't very much, but then again I don't mix songs or anything like that. XD)
It has the option of using the LAME Mp3 codec which I've always been fond of, go try it out.

ya its not ment for really heavy duty material, but remember again this is a free program and it really stands out because you can do more stuff with this, than you can for some other programs that you may even be paying for.

I have used Audacity before to edit my songs. I found this is very good software aviliable in market and more over its free. I love the fade out and fade in features of this Audio editing software. Hope everyone will get benefit from this software.

Yeah, Audacity is a pretty comparable freeware application to what I used to use, which is Goldwave. They essentially serve the same purpose but Goldwave isn't free and has a good bit more functionality. Being a musician, I do a lot of editing in this Goldwave. Although I do use larger programs like Cubase for recording, there's no easier way to edit the MP3's I've already mixed down than to fire up Goldwave. For that purpose, I could definitely use Audacity if I was looking for a freeware, open source solution. Not a bad program at all! =)
