SUPER by eRightSoft - Yes, ChrisTheFeral's introduction. I've been using it for months now and it's AWESOME. You do need limited technical knowledge about codecs, bitrates, and encoders to use, but it's THE best converter out there. Very very customizable (as in options, not skins, although there are a whole bunch of skins). Can even make avatars for you, and video to audio. Converts virtually anything I throw at it. And it's free ^_^

Mediacoder - Open source alternative. I installed it a week ago because someone needed help with it. While it's easy interface, and indeed even an idiot can use, there's not as much customization allowed. And it's not even specific enough. You can't even quantitize (ok, as in, see in NUMBERS) your bitrate, it's in a "low" "medium" or "high" quality with intervals in between. But it can convert video to audio. However, I'd still recommend SUPER if you know a bit more about converting.

All2Avi - Another open source converter. And it's specifically for files to .AVI. Anything I throw at it works, even H264 You don't have much choice in terms of customizing, but the high quality will be high enough for no lossless quality. (Ahem, anime theme here) I use this in conjunction with SUPER, and nothing can go wrong. Oops, also forgot, you can also add subtitles! Whether it's built-in or external. The only downside is that you can only have Arial font in 3 sizes Not too sure about special .as* effects though.

Queue for Encoding - Lol. No officially name, so I decided to dub it this. It's not really a new program, just a mixture of commandline and script programs that computer noobs and novices won't be able to use. AviSynth is one of them. But basically it converts for you any video to DVD-compatible MPEG2 and a good (customizable via the .ini file) size so there's no overscan. MKV is supported <3 And no quality loss, nor is there audio and subtitle sync!! It's so easy it's funny.
