Default What I recommend

Chris,

Doing a clean install isn't necessary, but there is a fair amount of bloatware on the HDX that you'll probably want to clean up.

There's a 14GB partiion on the HP HDX that contains the installation files.

Some of the features/software you may want to remove are Vongo player, HP Games, Yahoo! Toolbar, etc.

Media playback. Lol. I personally think CCCP can work for anything, playback or not. It's the drive and Bluray that counts, not the player :P

(I still think it would be illegal, you're downloading a pirated version)
Yes, but I personally like the looks of HP's media player :-p I would also be using VLC but do the media touch buttons work with that?

I'm not sure about the tv tuner, you'll have to wait for your Notebook PC to arrive and try it out!
Yes, I as also thinking that, the system will probably be fast enough anyway!

a 60-day trial for MS Office. There will also be an activation assistant that will not go away easily.
Norton SystemWorks trial. I got rid of this and replaced it with Avast! x64.
HP Health Check. If you find out how to get rid of this useless piece of software, please PM me.
HP Wireless Assistant. This might be useful if you have XP, but since Vista has a MUCH better wireless manager right out of the box, you don't really need it.
Actually, the only HP software I kept was DVD Play and Quick Launch Buttons.

<soapbox>
I really hate that they preinstall trial software from other companies like that. If they want to subsidize the cost of the computer with software, they should just put installers on the desktop, that way if you decide you don't want it, deleting it is no fuss, no muss. Uninstalling it always leaves traces.
</soapbox>

I also removed the WildTangent game manager. There should be no trace of a game running if you're not playing it. That's my philosophy.
You'll also get Roxio disc burning software. I replaced that with Nero, but I don't think there's anything wrong with Roxio; I just like Nero better.

The tuner is ATSC, so if you have that in .au, then the tuner will work.

As far as cases go, You might have some trouble there. In the meantime, use a tote bag.
Norton is a little heavy IMHO, I might go with Nod32, AVG or Avast.
As for MS-office, I can just install over that with the version that is being shipped separately to the software on the computer
Damn, we use DVB/T.. oh well, I always have s-video in and all those, so if I REALLY need to record something I might be able.

Thanks so much for the information I might keep Roxio, or rather, try it out first before I go deleting it.

Alright, awesome, I won't do a clean install if you beleive that, seeing as you have had a look around the system you have a good idea about it at the moment.
Also, a 14gb partition that is a LOT!!! Is it a partition that you have to keep or can I burn it to a few DVD's and clean that partition?

I think it will be best as Shan said and go through uninstalling the software I don't want to keep.
Do you know if the HDX comes with recovery disks? My sister bought herself a cheap compaq laptop well over a year ago and it didn't come with any, nor did the current HP I am on. Maybe it is different in Australia.

Thanks SO much for the help !

I did clean install for my laptop, right away after burning the drivers to a CD. I just don't feel fine if I don't do such because if a problem later comes up, I just think may be it was caused by that or this software.

Performance won't be a problem with HDX but if I were you, I would have done clean install right away after saving the drivers to a DVD. Don't do it though if you don't know what to do and how to do it. There's a small software for backing up Vista's license and restoring it made by some 3rd party guy.

Gah, I cant decide what to do, I prefer it to be clean, but I don't want to get rid of all the stuff that HP has put on. Xavier has had a look through and says I should worry about doing a clean install, so I think I will just uninstall the programs as I come across them.

Also, does upgrading to a service pack get rid of the stuff that HP puts on, my mate at school said that would get rid of all the stuff, but I don't remember it doing anything like that to XP.

EDIT: The HP website says it comes with recovery disks, so does this mean I can do a clean install and use the recovery disks if I want to go back? Just curious.

I hope HP has gotten their act together with the recovery disk. I got one with mine, and it's great, if your hard drive fails completely and you have to replace it with a brand new one. If you just partially hose the OS, the recovery disk will be useless. It only has one option: pave and rebuild. Because of that, I would highly recommend getting some kind of backup program. At least with the two hard drives, you can put all your data on a separate drive from the OS.

I forgot, lol. I should've known too, since I'm using HP right now.
They have the installation files built in this hidden partition. If you need to repair you can go to PC (or was it HP?) Tools in the Start Menu. I think you need to buy your recovery CDs seperately if you lost the partition like I did (stupid Fry's <_<)

Good idea, I'll do that

Yeah, I do also, but mine is only 4gb.
My sisters is 4gb but for some reason it keeps saying LOW ON DISK SPACE and she hasn't ever touched that drive. Any ideas?

Question Wow Bugs a Bug

Bow-Wow may look like your average terrier. The streets he walks may seem familiar. But just around the corner, things get a little unusual. With nary a word, Mark Newgarden and Megan Montague Cash have created a story about a bold new doggy who goes where no doggy has gone before. With a spring in his step and his tail only occasionally between his legs, Bow-Wow faces down every foe--well, almost every foe--in his path.Step aside, mutts. There's a new dog in town.More detailsBow-Wow Bugs a BugBy Mark Newgarden, Megan Montague CashPublished by Harcourt, 2007ISBN 0152058133, 978015205813556 pageswarhammer goldbuy warhammer goldwarhammer goldAION goldAION power leveling"The greatest kids' magazine in the world."
