Exclamation Going somewhere? Don't forget...

1 - Make a backup of your important data before you leave! If you're traveling to a place where you need a presentation or a couple of documents, why not go the extra mile and email it/them to yourself? Have your most pertinent and needed data available to you in the event of a laptop catastrophe!

2 - How far are you going? Do you need an extra battery? Do you have your power plug?

3 - Some hotels still have yet to graduate to wireless internet. In this event, be prepared by having a 25-foot ethernet cable! 25 feet should be enough to allow you to sit anywhere (maybe even in the bathroom, lol) in your room comfortably with the feeling of wireless freedom. Alternately, if you don't have wireless access built into your laptop, there are plenty of cheap USB wireless adapter alternatives, so you can always be prepared for whichever connection is needed! (Hopefully 56K is non-applicable but you may also want to keep a dial-up cable with you just in case)

4 - Laptop security. If you're staying in a hotel room, DO NOT ASSUME that you can leave your laptop in your room and not have some nosey room cleaner try to use it if you leave it on! Laptops also have a way of coming up missing, so if you're not going to take the laptop with you, consider hiding it and putting up your "DO NOT DISTURB" sign on the door before you leave. If you're leaving it online or something of that nature, make sure your password is sufficient and not something simple like a blank password, your login name, etc. Consider enabling EFS if you are running XP or Server but consider with caution. (Read all about EFS and how to enable it here)

5 - Don't forget the fun and miscellaneous stuff! Movies, games, music, etc. Do you need headphones? What about your webcam? Do you serve files from home? Make sure the server is enabled and working!

All-in-all, even if you're not a frequent traveler, take some time to write a list of the things you know you want and/or need to take. Start this list several days prior to leaving, just in case you leave something off initially! Keep this list handy. Reuse it and you will never go wrong when traveling. Happy trails!

Good list to check when you go away. Very useful.

But what is EFS? It has something to do with security, but what? So they can't log in at your computer?

Excellent question - I'm glad you brought it up! Okay, let's assume your OS crashes on you. You can't do a single thing to repair it but you've got a pretty good idea that all of your files are safe. All you would need to do to easily recover your files is take out the harddrive, pop it in another system as a slave drive (if it's a laptop HDD, there are IDE to USB cables out there that are cheap), then just browse the files of the HDD, copy over whatever you want and you're done. Now, that's you.

This may SEEM outlandish but it will illustrate the point: Let's say I'm a hotel employee and I know you have data on your computer I'm probably interested in. Let's say I do some social engineering and "randomly bump into you" and find out you're there for 4 days, going to meetings every day. On day 2, I walk in your room, try to access your laptop but it's locked with a password. No problem, I just turn your laptop off, take out the HDD, plug it in via one of those IDE/SATA to USB cables to my laptop I brought with me, copy all files/folders of interest, then pop your HDD back in your system and BAM. Done. Now, you may come back and think your only problem is your laptop somehow turned off.

XP doesn't enable EFS on its own. You need to because it can be a detriment if you forget your password. Anyway, let's take the same scenario from above and assume you have EFS encrypted. The data would not have been readable from the drive with it being hooked up as a slave. Quite simply, EFS encrypts files and folders of your choice on your OS and unless you're logged in (or if you have your password), you're not going to see the contents of those files! Like I said, the scenario may seem outlandish, but if you're of enough importance, that type of situation is very real!

If you lose your password, you're pretty much out of luck with the content on an EFS-enabled system. This is why it's another good reason to have information backed up at home, even if you back it up to an external HDD and keep it unplugged when you're not there! Hopefully this gave you a good idea of EFS, its usage and precautions!
