CCCP (it's not Russian) is the best way to go
And by the way, doesn't VLC operate on the computer's codecs? You still wouldn't be able to see anything if you don't have the right codec...
MediaInfo is in my opinion better than GSpot. It contains lots of vital information, as long as which codec is needed and which site you can download it from. Can replace the hover information so everything comes to you at a simple pause
